Biography
Born and reared in Panola County, Texas, John Rex grew up listening to country music on the famous Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was first inspired by Hank Williams and later by his uncle, the late and great Jim Reeves. His singing talents began to surface by the time he entered elementary school. He was singing in school plays and church activities in that area. He was also very active in sports and was chosen as a member of the All State Basketball team his senior year. He helped organize and served as captain of the golf team while attending Panola College in Carthage, Texas.
John Rex graduated from Stephen F. Austin State College in
Nacogdoches, Texas with a Bachelor of Science degree and then
served with the United States Army Military Police as a member of
the White House Staff. While serving in the army, he sang with
country groups around Ft. Gordon, Georgia and Ft. Jackson, South
Carolina. After being honorably discharged from the army, John
Rex married the former Neva Davidson of Carthage. They have two
sons, Scott and Jim.
John Rex's record of When Baby Holds Me was released by
Royal American Records and made the charts all over the country
in 1972. Since then his records of Keep Me in Mind, You're
the Reason, What Would You Do?, When You See It for Yourself,
Till You Can Make It on Your Own, You Can't Stop Me from Loving
You and After All These Years made the national
charts and were listed among the top 100 Country songs in the
nation. He had a TV album that was offered nationwide on TNN in
1992. He has appeared on various television shows and has worked
clubs and shows all over the Southwest. He appeared on the
Louisiana Hayride on several occasions. John Rex has toured
England, Scotland and Norway where he performed to sell-out
crowds. He has an active international fan club and continues to
tour on a regular basis. John Rex is on the board of directors of
the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in Carthage, Texas where he
hosts the annual John Rex Reeves Texas Country Music Hall of Fame
Pickin' Party.
John Rex likes to fish and hunt when time allows and enjoys
sports of all kinds. He lives in Humble, Texas and spends much
time with his family and friends at his hunting lodge in the
piney woods of East Texas. He is known for his sincerity of
purpose and outgoing personality. He loves to entertain live
audiences and to meet as many fans as possible. As far as he is
concerned, the country music fan is the most important part, and
his show is done with this in mind.
